Former Catholic priest Gerald Ridsdale has faced a court over dozens of fresh historical sex abuse charges against children  that allegedly took place between the 1960s and 80s..

A prosecutor at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Friday said she wished to add two more charges to a list of 36. One relates to the sexual penetration of a child under 10.

The 82-year-old Ridsdale appeared in the court via video link from Ararat prison.

Ridsdale was appearing for a committal mention charged with rape, buggery, indecent assault, and assault offences against nine boys and two girls.

The charges relate to offences that took place in Ballarat, Ocean Grove, Merbein, Edenhope, Quantong, Mortlake and Riverside, according to police charge sheets.

Ridsdale was charged by the Sano Taskforce, which was set up to investigate historical and new allegations of child sex abuse involving religious and non- government organisations.
