Smoke and mirrors

A multibillion dollar deal between the Coalition and the warring school sectors could be struck as soon as next week as Prime Minister Scott Morrison races to fix "unfinished business" on schools funding.

But one of the country's leading school policy analysts has warned a proposal leaked to the media would constitute an "outrageous special deal" likely to inflame the funding wars all over again.

Fairfax Media understands a deal to inject $4.4 billion into Catholic and independent schools, as reported by News Corp on Tuesday, was at the more costly end of options under consideration before Malcolm Turnbull was toppled as Prime Minister.
