We started our Science unit on Sound today. I'm a strong believer in the 'discovery science' approach to teaching science. I prepare the tasks and the learning, provide the DVDs, charts and apps to find information from and provide plenty of 'hands on' learning and then let the kids go for it. It has never failed. This boy spent the morning exploring what causes sound and how the ear works. I think he was most impressed by the tin can phone he made, the kazoo ( which I made sure he took home) and experimenting with the tuning forks.
Our local MLA, Geoff Howard ( Ballarat East) popped in today to check out the school since the BER improvements and to give us a Victorian state flag. Our Australian flag has fallen apart so we'll interchange it with the Aboriginal flag until we can get a new Australian flag. ( I'll have to invite our local federal member, Catherine King to visit for that.) Geoff has been an excellent local member and is up for re-election in November. He was a secondary teacher in another life and was involved in the education portfolio in the previous government. I took the opportunity to give him a package of information about rural education issues for him to mull over and hopefully discuss with the shadow education minister James Merlino.
